"I resolve...

to take care of my sister." This was my little boy's new year's resolution that was included on a kindergarten quilt of resolutions. How two siblings can be so good to eachother, love one another as these two do is beautiful to see. No longer does Peanut call for Mama to announce she's awake in the morning. Rather, it has become her brother she most needs to see first thing in the morning.



(As for resolutions, I hereby resolve to attempt to allow less than 3 weeks to elapse between blog posts. I'll shoot even for two.)

What a day today (well, now it's yesterday). Chachi biked an entire four miles! Ama and Boppa took Peanut for a few hours, and Hugo and I decided to spend some time outside before the rains struck. He biked, I ran. And suddenly, 4.5 miles later, he had accomplished something pretty great! All started out with vigor and and glee. By the tail end, the tired, cute little biker trailed the runner claiming, "Mama, this is like a bad dream." Ultimately, though, he was chipper and proud. By far one of my nicest runs to have him by my side.

Other milestones.
-Portia has mastered the art of cappuccino making. She knows just how to warm up the machine, express a blank shot, scoop the proper amount of grounds, add to the basket, tamp the grounds, release brew switch to start the espresso flow, prepare the machine for milk frothing, and delights in pouring the frothed milk into the prepared espresso. Really.
-Hugo's french is getting adorably good. Today, as we began a game of charades, he announced: "On commence!"
-Skiing is taking off. Thanks to Marc's commitment to afterschool skiing, Hugo has really begun to excel. He's fearlessly on the lift now, off the t-bar training hill, comfortably zigzagging his way down. We'll hope to get up north before the end of the season. Maybe I'll even summon the courage to get on some skis- as long as they're wider than they are long.

Most happily, on the school front, life is just plain old great. Both children love to go to school. What more, as a parent, can you ask for? Nice, kind, fun friends coupled with committed, energetic and inspired teachers makes for a good mix.

Looking back on some old shots of friends over the past couple of years- what would we do without pictures to remind us how children change and grow so dramatically. Completely don't notice it until you look back.

Back to the present...
The children have come to love watching the Bulldogs' hockey games. We're at least grateful that Hugo's allegiances have straightened out and we no longer have to pretend he's not our child as he vigorously cheers on Blue's opponent. We're instead now proud parents of the child dancing on the bleachers shrieking "GO BLUE!!" Especially sweet when his sister chimes in along with 4 and 5-year-old friends who constitute an equally loyal fanbase.

10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1...

Happy New Year! What a fun ringing in of 2010 we had! Day leading up to eve included a beautiful hike in our neighborhood white-blanketed woods.















A delicious grown-up dinner party/kids'jammie party ensued. Bedtime: 3 am.
(Only to be followed the next night by a 1 am bedtime.) ALL well worth it!



















A good start to the new year with the year's first ski trip. Big progress which led to Hugo's closing comment to the day: "Mama, that was my best run yet. Can I do the jumps next time around?" All I have to say is that if he takes after his father, this might be a distinct possibility; if, however, he's more my boy, the chances that we ever cross that bridge are - let's just say - completely nonexistent. At least I've somehow earned the honor of being the "best instructor ever"; if you know me and my relationship to this sport, this is quite a feat. Super proud of Hugo this past trip. He's really got it down now and feels comfortable with and excited about skiing. Portia used the harness, had fun, loved the chairlift and did great. Next trip we'll remove it and let her go. I've found that bribery, if need be, in the way of cookies in the car can be quite successful.
